Risk assessments are a legal requirement for employers in the UK and form the foundation of safe working practices.

This is particularly important when working in confined spaces, where hazards such as toxic gases, fire, explosion or entrapment can quickly escalate into serious incidents.

In this video, we explain the five key steps of a risk assessment and how they apply specifically to confined space operations.

Risk assessments are designed to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and implement controls to protect workers.

When working in confined spaces, hazards are often referred to as “specified risks.” These include:

  • Fire or explosion
  • Heat stress
  • Entrapment from free-flowing solids
  • Toxic or asphyxiating gases
  • Drowning

Each of these hazards has the potential to cause serious harm or fatalities if not properly managed.

A structured risk assessment ensures that hazards are identified before work begins and that suitable control measures are implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level.

Without a proper risk assessment, teams may enter confined spaces without fully understanding the dangers present.

Practical Steps / Key Takeaways

All workplace risk assessments follow the same five-step process:

1. Identify the hazards

Determine what in the confined space could cause harm.

2. Assess the risk

Evaluate how likely the hazard is to cause harm and how severe the consequences could be.

3. Control the risk

Implement control measures to eliminate or reduce the hazard where possible.

Examples may include:

  • Eliminating the hazard entirely
  • Using engineering controls
  • Providing appropriate PPE
  • Implementing safe systems of work

4. Record the findings

If your company employs more than five people in the UK, risk assessments must be documented.

5. Monitor and review

Risk assessments should be reviewed whenever processes, equipment or substances change.

Regular reviews ensure the assessment remains accurate and effective.

These are practical tools used to identify hazards, inform safe systems of work, and support decision-making on site.

In confined spaces, conditions can change rapidly due to environmental factors, equipment, or operational processes. A well-structured risk assessment helps teams anticipate these risks and prepare the appropriate control measures.

Through our confined space training courses, we help teams understand how to apply risk assessment principles in real-world environments ensuring both compliance and safer operations.
