Confined Space Escape Set Pre-Use Checks

Before entering a confined space, your equipment needs to be ready to perform when it matters.

Escape breathing apparatus sets are designed to protect workers during emergency situations, but only if they are properly checked beforehand.

These checks are simple, quick, and often overlooked. Yet they play a critical role in ensuring equipment is fit for purpose and ready for use.

A pre-use check is about one thing:

Confidence under pressure

In a confined space emergency, there is no time to:

  • Inspect equipment
  • Question its condition
  • Figure out how it works

The decision to use an escape set happens in seconds.

If that equipment hasn’t been checked beforehand, you’re relying on assumption not control.

Pre-use checks remove uncertainty and ensure that:

  • The equipment is functional
  • It meets required standards
  • It hasn’t been damaged or compromised

It’s a simple process, but it forms a critical part of safe confined space entry.

Practical Steps / Key Takeaways

Before entering a confined space, carry out these key checks:

  • Anti-tamper seal
Ensure the seal is intact and the set hasn’t been previously opened or used
  • Cylinder contents (gauge)
Confirm the cylinder is charged to at least the minimum required level
  • Test certification tag
Check the equipment is within its inspection and testing period
  • Bag condition
Inspect for damage, wear, or contamination that could affect usability
  • Shoulder strap and fittings
Ensure straps are secure, intact, and fit for use

If any of these checks fail, the equipment should not be used.

In many cases, escape sets are treated as a “just in case” item.

They’re stored correctly, issued correctly, and included in planning but not always checked before use.

This creates a gap between:

Having equipment available and Having equipment ready

At REAX, we focus on closing that gap.

Through training, consultancy, and practical resources, we help teams move beyond compliance and towards real-world readiness.

Because in confined space work, it’s not enough to have the right equipment, teams need confidence that it will perform when required.
