Our latest case study showcases our work with a top-tier Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) site, where we conducted a thorough site audit and Training Needs Analysis to enhance their safety protocols.

Client Background

The client, a prominent player in the manufacturing sector, approached us with concerns about their current training provider. Key members of their management team, including the Health & Safety Manager and Production Manager, were dissatisfied with the existing support and training. They requested our expertise to conduct a training needs analysis and assist with the classification of confined spaces, which had some discrepancies.

Challenges

During our assessment, we identified several significant challenges:

  • Multiple Types of Confined Space Entry: Many of these included working at height.
  • Lack of Trained Personnel: Insufficient training for handling confined spaces and work at height.
  • 24-Hour Shift Patterns: Scheduling training sessions was difficult due to round-the-clock operations.
  • No Rescue Equipment or Trained Personnel: A critical gap in their safety protocol.
  • Lack of Suitable Anchor Points: Essential for safe working at height.
  • Site Complexity: The site was split into two sections to separate different chemicals and manufacturing processes, adding to the logistical complexity.
  • Historic Site Additions: Over the years, various additions had been made, complicating safety assessments.
  • Lack of Clarity on Safe Systems of Work: Inadequate documentation and procedures for safe operations.

Our Solution

Our Technical Director led the site visit, performing a comprehensive site survey and training needs analysis. Collaborating closely with the Health & Safety team and the Permit to Work Team, we developed a bespoke training program to address their specific needs. The program included:

  • Confined Space Training: A medium-risk confined space course tailored to their environment.
  • Work at Height Training: Essential training for safe operations at elevated levels.
  • First Aid Training: Comprehensive first aid training to ensure immediate response capabilities.
  • Rescue Skills Training: Equipping 30+ employees with vital rescue skills.

Outcome

Our ongoing partnership with the client has flourished, with REAX becoming an integral part of their team. We provide regular scenario-based refresher training, first aid training and governance support, and assist with equipment procurement. We also participate in their internal training days as assessors and offer rescue team cover for essential work.

This collaboration highlights our commitment to safety and our ability to provide tailored, effective solutions for complex safety challenges.
