CABWI Level 2 Award in Working in High Risk Confined Spaces

The High Risk Confined Space Training course is a CABWI safety training course that is aimed at people that work in a high risk environment where the specific risk cannot be controlled or eliminated. Individual workers, as well as managers that need to supervise or assess work in these conditions, can all benefit from this advanced safety course.

The course will address risk assessment and the correct selection and use of safety equipment. It also provides information on the use of breathing apparatus, which is not included in some of the lower risk confined space training courses. This is an advanced course and participants will be required to undergo both practical and theoretical training in order to gain the skills required to enter high risk confined spaces.

REAX Ltd has a dedicated simulation centre. The confined space course requires both practical and theoretical education, and we have the facilities to cover both aspects. Our fully qualified and experienced instructors are accredited and can provide you and your team with all the training required to ensure that you comply with the Confined Space Regulations 1997 to ensure a safe working environment.

What Will Participants Learn?

  • Relevant government legislation
  • Current regulations
  • Identification of hazards and potential risks in confined spaces
  • Safe work entry systems
  • Fall protection blocks and their use
  • Gas and atmosphere monitoring techniques
  • Breathing apparatus (self-contained and airline) preparation, construction and service

The high risk qualification is an advanced course, which means that the candidate will learn a wide range of skills and knowledge associated with working in a high risk confined area.

You will be able to assess the area and determine the classification of the space. You will also be able to identify all hazards and potential hazards in the area enabling you to conduct a full risk assessment prior to entering the space.

You will learn how to safely access the confined space area, along with the safe systems of work that can be used in the type of space. The course also teaches the safe and proper use of Permit Control Entry systems and how to monitor gas and atmospheric conditions before you enter the area.

As with all confined space training courses we offer, you will be taught how to identify the most appropriate safety equipment, how to choose the best equipment for the circumstances, and how to use it efficiently and safely.

The high risk confined space training courses do offer education on how to use a range of breathing apparatus and systems. This includes information on how to use breathing apparatus escape, self-contained breathing apparatus, air line apparatus, and how to conduct pre-use, after-use and general checks on all the breathing equipment.

Who Needs This Course?

  • Course duration – 3 days
  • Recertification period – 3 years

REAX offers all its courses to individual workers. Anybody that works in confined spaces such as tanks and silos, vats or reaction vessels, can benefit from this training course. Managers and supervisors may also require this training as they may be required to check, supervise or assist the work that is conducted. The high risk course can also benefit rescuers and rescue operators, as it includes training on the use of breathing apparatus.

The high risk course duration is 3 days and includes both written and practical assessment. The course is valid for 3 years, which means that any participants will need to retrain again at the end of this time period.

Participant Requirements

  • No previous experience or qualifications required
  • Participants will need a reasonable level of physical fitness
  • Participants should not suffer from claustrophobia

In order to take the high risk confined space course, participants need to hold a reasonable level of fitness, and need to be able to work in confined and dark spaces unaided. This means that the course is not suitable for those that suffer claustrophobia. It will be necessary to complete a medical form stating that you are fit prior to the start of the course.
