If an employee, customer, or other third party suffers an injury or illness you could be held liable for those injuries. According to the Health and Safety At Work Act 1974, you have a legal requirement to ensure that employees have a safe working environment, while the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 also requires that employers provide adequate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure that injuries and accidents can be properly dealt with.
The regulations do not specify exactly what every company requires, instead requiring that you make “adequate and appropriate” provisions. The type of business you run, the type of work employees conduct, and even the layout and condition of the building you work in, determines what is adequate and appropriate. It isn’t a legal requirement to provide first aid for the public, but the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) does recommend that members of the public are included in a risk assessment.
REAX Ltd offers a wide range of courses, including first aid courses for employees and professionals alike. If you want to ensure that somebody in your organisation has first aid skills and accredited qualifications, our training courses are designed for you.
We have a wide range of safety courses including the following first aid courses for Lancashire businesses:
Accidents and injuries can occur at any time and in any location. They are especially common in high risk workplaces and industries. The construction industry typically attracts the highest rate of injuries at work, but every workplace carries some risk. It is important that your business conducts a risk assessment to determine how likely it is that a person will injure themselves, the types of injury that are most likely, and how likely those injuries are. Using this information, it is possible to put a first aid plan in place, not only meeting regulations but also helping ensure that you provide a safe and comfortable working environment for all of your employees.
First aid training courses do vary. There are different levels of course, ranging from basic courses for those with no experience and that only require basic training and where there are no specific threats of injury. There are also specialist courses, such as first aid at height; if an employee that is working at height becomes injured, it might be necessary for a first aider to get access to them and perform first aid in situ, rather than trying to get them down to the ground first.
If you have determined that you need a first aid representative in your organisation, you should also ensure that you always have somebody on site that is qualified and trained. You can offer first aid training to any employee, and can consider offering it to managers or supervisors, or providing specialist courses like first aid at height to those that are qualified and trained to work at height.
All employees are entitled to feel safe, and work in a safe environment, when they are at work. If an employee is involved in an accident and suffers an injury, you could be responsible under the Health and Safety At Work Act 1974. The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 act also determines that you need to provide adequate and appropriate first aid for your employees. If you fail to meet these requirements, you could be held legally responsible and even face legal action.
